Subaru Ascent vs VW Atlas: Interior Dimensions & Seating

These 3-row SUVs have about the same passenger volume; however, the interior of the Subaru Ascent can fit more people. The third row in the 2019 VW Atlas has two seats. This means that the VW Atlas can seat up to seven people with second-row bench seats, and up to six people with second-row captain's chairs. The 2019 Subaru Ascent, by comparison, can seat up to eight people with its three-seat third row. Choosing second-row captain's chairs still lets you fit up to seven occupants.

Subaru Ascent vs VW Atlas: Comfort & Technology

Of course, seating alone isn't the only thing that makes an SUV comfortable. That's why the 2019 Subaru Ascent comes standard with tri-zone automatic climate control that makes sure everyone can stay warm or cool enough. Dual-zone climate control is what comes standard on the 2019 VW Atlas. You can upgrade to tri-zone, but it will cost more.

The 2019 Subaru Ascent also boasts more impressive technology than the 2019 VW Atlas. For example, you can equip your Subaru Ascent with available 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity. This is a feature that's not available on the VW Atlas.

Subaru Ascent vs VW Atlas: Performance

Whether you're headed down the street or exploring a little-known trail, the Subaru Ascent is a perfect companion. Its six-cylinder BOXER® engine is horizontally opposed for a low center of gravity and a smooth drive--and it generates 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, as well! This is more power than you'll find in the standard VW Atlas engine, which generates 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The Volkswagen Atlas does offer an available V6, but even this has less torque than the Subaru Ascent (not to mention worse gas mileage).

And if you're headed off-road, the Subaru Ascent is immensely capable. With its 8.7 inches of ground clearance and standard features like Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Hill Descent Control, it's ready to tackle all kinds of terrain. The Volkswagen Atlas comes standard with front-wheel drive; you have to pay more to get AWD. In addition, it only has 8 inches of ground clearance.

Subaru Ascent vs VW Atlas: Safety

In addition to giving it exceptional off-road performance, the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive also makes the Subaru Ascent even safer. The extra traction provided by this AWD system makes it more capable of handling slick or snowy roads. It makes sense: Subaru is dedicated to keeping you safe, and it hasn't escaped notice. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2019 Subaru Ascent its most prestigious award, the 2019 Top Safety Pick+ award. The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas, by comparison, got no IIHS safety awards at all.

Subaru Ascent vs VW Atlas: Driver Assist Technology

Every 2019 Subaru Ascent comes with EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, which has been shown to reduce rear-end collisions with injuries by up to 85%! EyeSight® comes with Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, and Pre-collision Braking. Pre-collision braking does come standard on the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas; however, the other features are only available as more expensive upgrades.
