2019 Subaru Crosstrek vs 2019 Jeep Cherokee SUV Comparison in Columbus, OH

The Subaru Crosstrek is probably the closest thing the world has to the platonic ideal of a crossover SUV. It's nimble and car-like in its handling, but it has the higher ground clearance and adventurous spirit that characterize Subaru SUVs. But as impressive as it is, the Subaru Crosstrek is not without its challengers, like the Jeep Cherokee. As a small SUV, the Jeep Cherokee is larger and more expensive than the Subaru Crosstrek--but do you get greater value for the extra money?

At Byers Airport Subaru, we believe that knowledge is power. That's why we've put together Subaru comparison pages like the one you're reading right now. Below, you'll find plenty of information on how these two crossovers compare to each other. Just be sure to get the full experience by taking a Subaru Crosstrek for a test drive!

Subaru Crosstrek vs Jeep Cherokee: Interior Space

The Jeep Cherokee and the Subaru Crosstrek are in different segments, which means that the Cherokee has more interior volume than the Subaru Crosstrek. However, comfort extends beyond mere square feet, and the Subaru Crosstrek puts its space to better use. You'll get more front headroom, front legroom, and rear shoulder room in the Subaru Crosstrek. And when you fold down the second row of seating, it's the Subaru Crosstrek that offers more cargo space.

If more interior space is what you need, see how the 2019 Subaru Forester compares to the 2019 Jeep Cherokee. You'll get the extra space you need, combined with the quality of a Subaru.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Jeep Cherokee: Comfort & Tech

The Subaru Crosstrek is a truly comfortable crossover. You'll need a test drive to get the full experience, but there are certain features it offers that are sure to impress--including available heated front seats and leather upholstery. While these can also be found as upgrades in the Jeep Cherokee, they're available at a much higher price point than they are in the Subaru Crosstrek. The same goes for tech features like a navigation system: it's available in both, but will cost you less in the Subaru Crosstrek.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Jeep Cherokee: Performance

Jeep may have cultivated an off-road-ready image, but the Subaru Crosstrek is actually better equipped to handle dirt trails and back roads than the entry-level Jeep Cherokee. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (a powerful full-time AWD system) is a standard feature of the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek, and it comes with 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The Jeep Cherokee starts off with front-wheel drive; to get 4WD, you'll have to pay more to upgrade an already more expensive SUV. The Jeep Cherokee has less standard ground clearance, as well: just 5.9 inches. To even match the Subaru Crosstrek, you'd have to choose the expensive Trailhawk trim level.

In addition, the Subaru Crosstrek comes with a BOXER® engine that generates a spirited 152 horsepower. This is less than you'll find in the Jeep Cherokee; however, the horizontally opposed BOXER® engine means that the Subaru Crosstrek has a smoother, more balanced drive. You'll also get better gas mileage in the Subaru Crosstrek than in any Jeep Cherokee.

Want a more powerful engine than the Subaru Crosstrek offers? Check out the 2019 Subaru Outback! Its two engine options are comparable in power to the engines in the Jeep Cherokee, but with the benefits that come from the SUBARU BOXER® design.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Jeep Cherokee: Safety Ratings

Safety is a top priority for Subaru, and the experts have noticed. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek its highest honor, the 2019 Top Safety Pick+ award. In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek a perfect five-star overall safety rating. The 2019 Jeep Cherokee only earned four stars from the NHTSA, and it received no IIHS awards at all.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Jeep Cherokee: Driver Assist Technology

Even the entry-level Subaru Crosstrek comes with EyeSight®, a suite of driver assist features that includes adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure and sway warning, and pre-collision braking. You can find these on the Jeep Cherokee, too, but there's a big difference. These features aren't available at all on the entry-level Cherokee, or even the next trim level up from that.
